A machine that allows me to do something fun (ex. watch TV, play video games, etc.) while studying hard.

I hate finals.

What are your studying methods for acing a test?

Having graduated from a university (University of California - Davis) that was on a quarter system, I developed some pretty good study techniques.

Really, the main thing is to eliminate distractions and free up your entire week. This means get your food shopping and whatever needs you will have out of the way. Have your room/apt clean, laundry done, dishes washed, finances in order, etc. Study in blocks, allowing yourself a little free time -- not road trip to the city stuff, more like watch a favorite show on TV or a ball game or an hour or two playing games, stuff that won't take you out of your environment, but will free up your mind so you stay fresh and not burnt out. Allow yourself plenty of rest, and keep hydrated. And good luck.

study for 30 minutes a night for five nights before the test, rather than cramming the night before.

your brain will retain more knowledge through REM sleep over the five nights, or so i've read.

plus then you don't feel like you've spent as much time studying and it is not as hard on your body.

One method that I use for harder conceptual courses is to associate watch TV and associate a random (commonly used in society) word with a concept from my course. Everytime someone on TV says that word, I repeat the concept aloud. It's awkward at first but it keeps me playing attenction to a show instead sitting there drooling out of a corner of my mouth.

I was always an auditory learner, so studying didnt usually get me very far....so going to class and listening was my best way to study. (and graduated college with a 3.12--good enough for me since pe counted in that as well as a pre-med weed out class that I was required to take even though I was an art major! --and religion and art ed).
The 2 classes that relied on JUST text books or such I did rather poorly in as I dont learn visually as I am partial blind.
Still the best way to study is to have a set time for it, get plenty of rest, eat well and dont cram---thats not a good idea, and yes try to keep the distractions to a minimum.

Revise for 30mins to an hour a night, make sure you make a summary sheet of what you've covered.

Have a look at the summary before you go to sleep, then look at it again in the morning.

As has shursh said, you'll take in a lot over night and reading it again in the morning will cement it in your brain.

This is how I passed my masters course.

A few more tips:

- Depending on what you're studying, try to draw it out and make a story out of it.
- Leave post-its around the bathroom or in the mirror where you look every morning
- Colour code your notes (apparently this fires more synapses and allows you to retain more)
- Write things down rather than think through in your head. This forces you to think about something rather than 'think' you know it.
- Talk to yourself and run through the material that you know (again talking out loud will fire more synapses in your brain to help you retain the info).

Meh. I'm happy with an average of around 4.0. Out of 6, but nobody gets more than 5.0 AND having a social life/friends at school/cheating like hell/kissing teachers' asses.
